For over 120 years the small Salvation Army hall in Wood Street, Norton on Derwent has been home to an intrepid group of Salvationists. They have come to and from their meetings with trumpets, tambourines, Bibles, not to mention tea and biscuits.

The Salvation Army in Malton and Norton on Derwent is one of 700 centres in the United Kingdom, which are both places of worship and community centres. In our part of the Army World, young and old are cared for in a varied weekly programme. Step inside the hall and you enter a bright, friendly environment, with comfortable seating on a carpeted floor. Modern multimedia technology is used to enhance our adult worship services and children's meetings.

For instance, on Sunday morning (at 10.00 am) and on Tuesday evening (at 6.30 pm) the children enjoy games, quizzes and other interesting activities, all aimed at presenting Jesus' teaching of love, faith and social responsibility. In addition, we have good relationships with local schools, sometimes taking part in lessons and leading school assemblies.

We are also known for our work with people at the other end of the age range. The doors open on Mondays in time for a warm and nourishing meal at 1.00 pm. The Luncheon Club is a favourite of the week, so much so that it is rumoured that at least a dozen people 'lie' about their age to join in. Lunch is followed at 2.15 pm by the Over Sixties Club.

Everybody knows The Salvation Army band and songsters. In Malton, these groups are regularly in demand for community events -- garden parties, processions, civic services, outdoor and indoor church services. Many people say it is not Christmas until they have heard The Salvation Army band playing the music of this important Christian festival, and we enjoy (or should that be endure?) a hectic carolling programme every December.

Some of us wear uniform, whilst others choose not to. The beauty is that anyone can come and be part of this lively vibrant fellowship. This means that young or old, rich or poor, theological student or trombone player, enthusiastic volunteer or someone who just wants to come and join in Christian worship are welcome. Worship is the driving force of our service within the community. Sunday worship is held at 11.00 am and 6.00 pm -- and there is a place for you!
